4 Popular Bathtub Styles for Your Bathroom Remodel

The bathtub is one of the major focal points of a bathroom. While many of our remodeling clients choose to remove the tub completely, replacing it with an updated style is a great way to modernize the space without compromising any functionality of the bathroom. Oftentimes, simply changing the style of the tub can free up a substantial amount of space and contribute to a more streamlined aesthetic. If you’re on the fence about removing your bathtub, first consider replacing it with one of these 4 popular styles:

Undermount

An undermount bathtub includes a flat basin that sits on the floor and is installed beneath a tub surround and a deck. The rim of the tub is hidden by the deck, which hangs over the edge of the basin and creates a smooth transition into the tub. The tub surround can be customized with a slab, paneling, or doors for a high-end appeal that compliments the rest of the bathroom. This style has a sleek and high-end appeal, making it a top choice among homeowners.

PROS: Versatility with available shapes, sizes, and materials, customizable features

CONS: More difficult to install than other options, can be bulky or take up a lot of space

Freestanding

Freestanding tubs are very versatile in that they can be placed almost anywhere in your bathroom. Freestanding bathtubs come in a variety of materials, sizes, and colors, allowing a wonderful opportunity for creativity and customization. This type of tub is usually for the purpose of rest and relaxation.

PROS: Versatility of style, easy to install, freedom of placement
CONS: Typically heavier weight, cannot use as a shower/tub combo, no storage with lack of a tub deck, may be challenging for those with mobility issues

Alcove

Alcove bathtubs are common in guest bathrooms and smaller spaces. They are recessed into a wall and surrounded on three sides. Because they are almost entirely enclosed when installed, they are not finished on the sides; only the front of the tub has a finished apron. This apron can be customized to match the surrounding walls or tiles. Most come in acrylic, fiberglass, or enameled steel. This is typically the type of tub used for shower/tub combos, as a showerhead and glass doors can be installed, making it a functional choice. Alcove tubs are considered one of the most affordable bathtub types.

PROS: cost, functionality, space-saving, easy maintenance

CONS: Limited customization and placement options

Drop-in

You can think of a drop-in tub as the opposite of an undermount – they are “dropped in” to a pre-made frame so that the rim of the tub sits on top of the surround. Because they are completely enclosed by the surround, they do not have any finished sides. Many homeowners prefer the look of a drop-in bathtub due to the streamlined look it creates.

PROS: Deep sides for soaking, easily accessible, customizable with many size and material options

CONS: Usage difficulty for those with mobility issues due to the deep step in/out, a trickier installation requiring a frame/deck
