Mike’s Guys: 3 Exterior Projects to Prep Your Home for Spring

Spring is only a few weeks away, and the weather in North Texas is already giving us a preview of what the upcoming stormy season holds. Just a few days ago, it reached nearly 80 degrees in DFW, followed by a bitter cold-front and heavy rain. The rollercoaster of high and low temperatures coupled with bouts of rain, winds, and hail can make it a harsh environment for outside structures such as your home. We say this every year, but as a team of home improvement professionals, we cannot stress enough how important it is to perform routine maintenance on your home’s exterior prior to the stormy seasons! Repairing, updating, and maintaining your home ahead of time will prevent much more serious issues down the road.

Here are 3 exterior home projects to complete going into the spring season (that Mike’s Guys Handyman can help with!)

  1. Refresh the Exterior Paint & Siding. The exterior of your home endures constant exposure to harsh weather, which means it gets worn out over time. Old paint can fade, change colors, crack, and peel, resulting in a less-than-desirable aesthetic. Siding also weakens over time and can eventually crack or leak. Replacing worn-out siding is very important in the prevention of more serious future home repairs. If your siding is cracked, warped, rotted, bubbled, or streaked, it may be time to replace it.

  1. Replace Exterior Doors & Trim: Often times, exterior doors and trim need replacing due to years of wear and tear from the elements, usually including water damage. It might sound simple to take out an old door and pop in a new one, but it is actually one of the more complex handyman services we offer. There are a lot of variables when it comes to door replacements, such as the width of the jamb, the type of casing, the trim, and bore specifications. There is even more to take into consideration if the existing door is rotten because water is coming in where it shouldn’t – this requires us to determine the cause of the issue and fix it prior to installing the replacement door. Of course, there are companies out there that would install a new door without fixing any underlying issues first, but who wants to put a band-aid on something that will only cause the same problem a year or so down the road?!

  1. Check for Roof Damage. Your roof is one of your home’s biggest shields against the elements, which is why it should be inspected frequently. Loose, damaged, or missing shingles can allow for severe water damage if not addressed in a timely manner. It’s important not to put off repairs if you see damaged areas in your roof – doing so could end up costing your hundreds or even thousands in water damage repair later on! Although Mike’s Guys doesn’t offer full roof replacements, we can certainly assist with roofing repairs and maintenance.

While these 3 are not the only exterior projects to consider, completing them prior to the stormy spring season will benefit your home greatly. If you would like to have someone come out to inspect your home’s exterior, or have questions about another handyman project, Mike’s Guys would be happy to help! Contact us today to get started!
