If you’ve worked with Medford Design-Build in the past or if you’re familiar with our process, you know that the design aspect of home remodeling is at the very core of what we do. It is one of the first things we discuss upon our initial meeting with you and it continues as the primary guideline throughout the entirety of your project. From our custom design packages to the interior design services we include in your remodel, we believe it is critical that the design portion of your project is thoroughly and successfully executed. The design is not only the foundation on which we base your project, but it is also what makes your remodel unique, custom, and truly one-of-a-kind! That being said, it’s important that we have a clear understanding of your wants and expectations regarding the outcome of your home remodel.
One of the most helpful tools we have found when it comes to communicating design ideas is Houzz.com. Houzz is a website (similar to Pinterest) which serves as a fantastic platform for homeowners to browse a variety of remodeling photos and research local professionals. It also allows interior designers, design-build firms, architects, custom home builders, general contractors, and other types of professionals to showcase their services to those searching in their area. We often encourage our clients to do some exploring on Houzz before their consultation with us so they can get an idea of their likes and dislikes when it comes to design. Narrowing down your preferences in the beginning makes for a much smoother, quicker process when it’s time for us to create your custom designs!
A really neat feature of Houzz is the ability to make and share “idea books.” Say you are considering a farmhouse-style kitchen or white and gray marble countertops; simply type in your search term in the search box at the top of the page and you’ll be provided with tons of photos associated with that term (notice there are over 84,000 results for ‘farmhouse kitchen’ shown above!) You are then able to save any photos that spark your interest to your idea book and include notes on what you like or don’t like in each photo. You can then to share your idea books with us directly through Houzz, so our designers can see all of the photos you’ve saved, along with your notes. This process doesn’t only serve as a valuable communication tool and time saver, but can also provide some great inspiration to you as a homeowner when you’re feeling lost about design ideas. Sometimes, a few examples are all you need to get your creativity and interest flowing (of course, our design team is here to help with input and ideas as well!)
