If you live in North Texas, you’re no stranger to the changing weather patterns and seemingly constant fluctuations in the forecast. With winters that often include snow and summer temperatures scorching well over 100 degrees, it’s fair to say that Texans get to experience the full spectrum of the seasons. It’s no surprise that many homeowners come to us with the desire to enclose a patio or add a sunroom to their home in order to take advantage of the changing weather.
Sunrooms, also called all-seasons rooms, are incredibly versatile and can be used for just about anything – a breakfast nook, a spare bedroom, a second den, a hobby room… pretty much whatever the homeowner needs! Along with their versatility, sunrooms bring the outdoors in so you can enjoy the view and natural light without the discomfort of the elements.
Our recent clients in North Richland Hills had an existing sunroom off the back of their house, just on the other side of the breakfast nook. The bay windows overlooked the enclosed room, with the back door entering into it instead of directly to the backyard. While this layout was functional, it made the breakfast area feel crowded – especially with their large table. It felt as though the enclosed space in the sunroom would have been better utilized inside the nook. Our clients expressed this issue to us and determined that extending the breakfast nook to create a new sunroom was the best solution.
The before and after floor plans show the removal of the original sunroom and the space it freed up to extend the breakfast nook. Not only did this allow for additional interior space, but also a half-covered patio outside.
The new sunroom doubles as the breakfast nook and fits their dining table comfortably! It was important to the clients that the ceiling in the addition was vaulted to follow the roof line, so our designers made sure to incorporate that feature.
The vaulted ceiling makes the new addition feel big and open with lots of windows to enjoy the backyard views of the yard and the pool.
Soft blue paint and white beadboard were used to tie in the design to the existing kitchen and living room, making the addition feel as though it has always been a part of this home!
On the exterior, we chose to use siding instead of brick as a cost-savings measure. This option looked natural, as there are other areas of the exterior that use siding. The end goal of any addition is for it to appear as if it were part of the original build, not added on later. This project is proof that this goal is attainable!
The completed remodel solves all of the issues our clients had with the original breakfast nook and sunroom. They can now enjoy the beautiful view of their backyard from inside, with plenty of room for their guests at the table, and also take advantage of the comfortable weather under their new covered patio outside.
If you’re interested in enclosing a patio or adding a sunroom to an existing room, our designers would be happy to walk you through the design-build process. Contact us today for more info and start enjoying all the seasons that Texas has to offer!
