It’s interesting to watch interior design trends change as the years go by. One of the most popular trends we are seeing recently is a more modern aesthetic, typically with shaker-style or slab cabinetry for a streamlined look. These cabinets are often paint-grade with a cool or light color scheme (gray and white is a big favorite!) A quick search on Pinterest or Houzz will provide hundreds of inspiring examples. This aesthetic is certainly beautiful and is the ideal design for many of our clients. However, it is always a welcomed change of pace to get the request for the more classic, traditional vibe – dark wood stain, raised-panel cabinetry, and warm tones. Our recent clients in Arlington, Texas, wanted just that for their long-awaited kitchen renovation. See the full story on our blog post.
Our recent clients have a gorgeous home just off the lake in Arlington, TX. Many updates had already been made throughout the original 1978 build when the clients initially came to us, and the kitchen was one of the last items on their list to remodel. They knew the space needed a more modern aesthetic to match the rest of the house and the stunning view of the lake from the large breakfast nook windows.
Because the layout wasn’t going to change, it was important that the functional and aesthetic modifications were impactful. Custom cabinetry, new backsplash tile, countertops, and updated stainless steel appliances were a few of the items discussed early on. Along with keeping the butcher block countertop on the island, the clients also wanted to keep the existing stainless steel back panel and vent hood with the gas range, which was noted in the designs. Our team began working on the design package to showcase these changes and detail the scope of work required for completion.
In today’s tech-savvy society, just about everything is done online. You can order almost anything you can imagine, and have it delivered directly to you in as little as two days! You can order your groceries for the week, pay online, and have them dropped off at your doorstep without talking to anyone or changing from your bathrobe. Whether we realize it or not, the convenience of ordering products and services online is influencing the way we think and the way we shop. This generation has become shockingly accustomed to making rash decisions and receiving quick service. And, if you don’t like your purchase? Send it back and buy something else with just a few clicks on your phone or computer. The quicker the transaction and the least amount of human interaction, the better. This might sound like an incredible convenience when you’re browsing the web, but this mindset can be dangerous when you’re considering larger investments – like a home remodel.
As exciting as it is to remodel your home, one thing that has to be considered beforehand is a realistic budget. No one likes to talk money up front, but trust us, it’s better to establish your financial parameters as a first step rather than a last step! With all of the inspiring home renovation shows and pretty home transformation photos on Pinterest, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a potential remodel. Unfortunately, those TV shoes and online photos almost never tell the whole story, nor do they go into the details of actual project costs. For that reason, the picture of a high-end luxury remodel at an astoundingly low cost is painted in the mind of the consumer, creating a serious case of sticker-shock when the real price quotes are presented!
One of the most popular requests we receive by our handyman division, Mike’s Guys, is for exterior door replacement. Often times, exterior doors and trim need replacing due to years of wear and tear from the elements, usually including water damage. It might sound simple to take out an old door and pop in a new one, but it is actually one of the more complex handyman services we offer. There are a lot of variables when it comes to door replacements, such as the width of the jamb, the type of casing, the trim, and bore specifications. There is even more to take into consideration if the existing door is rotten because water is coming in where it shouldn’t – this requires us to determine the cause of the issue and fix it prior to installing the replacement door. Of course, there are companies out there that would install a new door without fixing any underlying issues first, but who wants to put a band-aid on something that will only cause the same problem a year or so down the road?!
Exterior door installation requests are not always in relation to damaged doors, however. We also get requests to install sliding patio doors or traditional French doors where there is not already an existing door. This request may be to install the door in place of a set of windows, or just in a desired location on an exterior wall.
Here is an example of a French door installation we did for a client that wanted to access the backyard from the master bedroom:
If you are interested in having new exterior doors installed, or if you need to replace some damaged ones, our team would be happy to help! The quickest option we offer for quoting this type of project is a virtual estimate: simply snap some photos of your existing problem doors or of the wall you’d like to install a door in and email them to us for a quote. We’ll need the approximate width and height of the doors, along with interior and exterior photos. If you’d like to proceed with the quote we provide, we’re happy to completely manage the project going forward. We’ll send one of our handymen out to take hard measurements, source and order the door, complete installation once it’s delivered, and finish out the door with painting. We’re happy to consider ourselves a ‘one-stop-shop’ for door installations, making it easier on you as the homeowner while allowing us to provide the highest level of quality workmanship!
We can also offer assistance with other types of door installations, such as interior doors, barn doors, and decorative iron doors. Contact us today for more information!
