In the original kitchen, counter space near the sink and cooktop was practically nonexistent. Appliance storage was scattered and inconvenient. And the peninsula (which should have made kitchen prep easier) was actually getting in the way. The challenge wasn't a lack of square footage - it was a lack of functionality.
Rethinking the layout of this dysfunctional space was the first order of business. Relocating the cooktop and range would free up counter space exactly where the homeowners needed it most - around the sink. We adjusted the peninsula to improve traffic flow, which meant tightening space in the adjacent nook a little. The homeowners, however, agreed it was an easy trade-off.
Removing upper cabinets at the peninsula opened up sightlines through the nook and out toward the beautiful side yard, without gutting the kitchen's structure. And for appliance storage, we designed a dedicated pantry system with a home for countertop appliances, ensuring everything stays accessible with nothing cluttering the counters.
Before the demo starts - we design. That's not how every remodeler works, but it’s a critical part of how Medford Design-Build does. Every project starts with our Design Package: detailed floor plans, 3D renderings, a full scope of work, and a budget items worksheet. You see exactly what you're getting, how long it’s going to take, what it costs, and why, before demo day ever arrives.
You're also working directly with our in-house designers throughout our process. Someone who's asking the right questions: How do you actually move through this space? What drives you crazy every morning? What would make your day feel easier?
For this kitchen, the answers shaped everything. Not enough counter space near the sink. No real home for the appliances they use daily. A layout that felt like it was working against them. We took all of that and built it into the design. By the time demo started, every decision had already been made.
Finishes were chosen to feel warm and cohesive. Shaker-style cabinets in a mix of creamy paint and deep stain brought richness without darkness. Carefully chosen finishes include:
The nook got its own refresh, too. Dated wall wainscoting and built-in telephone desk came out, making way for a round dining table and updated lighting. Still a nook, just one that finally feels like a purposeful extension of the updated space.
Same space, same square footage and yet it feels completely transformed. The soft cream cabinets, quartz countertops, and herringbone backsplash come together in a way that feels bright, calm, and completely intentional. Open shelving at the angled wall adds personal character and warmth, and the arched passthrough became a quiet focal point that gives the whole kitchen a little personality.
No walls moved. No square footage expanded. Just a better plan, better decisions, and a family that's thrilled to cook in their kitchen again.
