Our recent clients in Grand Prairie, Texas were looking to make updates and modifications throughout the majority of their 20-year-old home. One of their top priorities was upgrading the dated, crowded, and poorly laid out master bathroom. Not only were we able to create a beautiful, modern look, but also a more functional space with handicap-accessible features.
The original bathroom was designed by the builder to appeal to potential buyers, with double vanities, a corner garden tub, and a modern framed glass shower. While these features might sound good on paper and certainly would intrigue a new home buyer, the reality was that the bathroom was much too small for two vanities, the corner tub was difficult to get to, and the framed glass was small and quickly became outdated.

BEFORE FLOOR PLAN: Not only did the bathroom feel crowded, but the location of the entrance door and the fact that it opened inward to the bathroom made it almost impossible for someone to use the vanity sink behind it.
AFTER FLOOR PLAN: The updated plans involved eliminating the center vanity and replacing it with a new tub. The original framed glass shower was removed and replaced with a larger, door-less shower which extended to the corner where the tub once used to be. This new shower is wide enough to allow for a wheel chair, and also includes a small floor ramp for easy access.
The plans also showed the shortening of the wall between the toilet room and the bathroom entrance, allowing the door to be moved slightly to the right. This created an open walkway to the center of the bathroom to provide more space for the vanity on the opposite side. Additional storage space was also created with the larger vanity and custom cabinets installed over the toilet.

Also contributing to the more spacious feel was the replacement of the inward-swinging door with two double doors that swung outward into the bedroom.
The dividing wall beside the shower is topped with a frosted glass panel, providing for privacy and a modern aesthetic while still allowing ample light into the shower. What a beautiful, functional transformation!
