Stone Fireplace Remodel
Remodeling traditional brick fireplaces is one of our favorite projects to do. They can be transformed in so many ways, the possibilities are endless, and the results are usually stunning. For this fireplace, we used salvaged rustic stone and a cedar log for the mantle, providing for a rugged, masculine finish.
BEFORE: Here is the brick fireplace before the remodel. We salvaged the stone from a patio demolition, and the cedar log came from a friend’s field. The outline of the fireplace was drawn on the garage floor and the pieces were laid out to get a sense of how it was going to come together.
The fireplace was skim-coated with thin set to level out the surface. The base stones were cut to maximize their natural size and shape, and then the remaining stones were cut to fit around them.
The grout color is pewter. The stone was sealed with an enhancer.
Making the mantel was a lot of fun. Our good buddy and master wood worker Ray cut it with his band saw. After a few coats of spray-on varnish, it looks awesome!
On this project, we are created a cabin-like feel in a small den. We chose to go with a rustic contemporary design.
