Whole House Remodel Part 2: Refreshing the Living Spaces

If you follow Medford Design-Build on Facebook or subscribe to our e-newsletter, you know that we recently completed a whole house remodel in a 1970’s home in Arlington, Texas. We posted the first blog in our 4-part series for this project last month, starting with the kitchen. This month, we’re excited to share the beautiful updates we completed in the living spaces!

In many of the homes we remodel today, an open-concept floor plan is the end goal. The kitchen is either already open to the living room, or it is in our remodeling plans to remove walls, resulting in one large, open space. In either instance, it’s important to have consistent flooring and paint colors to create a flowing, cohesive feel. For this particular home, the original floorplan of the kitchen and surrounding living spaces provided the most usable space in regard to countertops and cabinetry. The home had really good bones, so the decision was made to leave the existing walls where they were and just update the aesthetic of the living spaces instead, keeping in mind the concept of a consistent theme throughout. Rebuilding a Local “Treehouse” for Southlake Students

The Medford Team is beyond grateful to be a part of our local Tarrant County community. We’re always happy to provide assistance and support to those around us when we can. Recently, one of our clients from Southlake reached out to us for help rebuilding their child’s Elementary School “treehouse.” This treehouse consists of two large, circular decks with benches built around the base of two separate oak trees on the Carroll Elementary School grounds. It has been a cherished part of the school for over 18 years, as it has been used for outdoor education days, teddy bear picnics, and as a welcomed treat to both teachers and students, whenever they were able to enjoy the outdoors on a sunny day. We received a call from them at the end of last year, and have since been able to complete their whole house remodel! We’ll be posting a series of 4 blog posts to showcase the details of this major project, starting with the kitchen. Check out the beautiful transformation in our most recent post! Read more

3 Steps to Creating a Budget for Your Major Remodeling Project

As exciting as it is to remodel your home, one thing that has to be considered beforehand is a realistic budget. No one likes to talk money up front, but trust us, it’s better to establish your financial parameters as a first step rather than a last step! With all of the inspiring home renovation shows and pretty home transformation photos on Pinterest, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a potential remodel. Unfortunately, those TV shoes and online photos almost never tell the whole story, nor do they go into the details of actual project costs. For that reason, the picture of a high-end luxury remodel at an astoundingly low cost is painted in the mind of the consumer, creating a serious case of sticker-shock when the real price quotes are presented! Mike’s Guys: Installing New Exterior Doors

One of the most popular requests we receive by our handyman division, Mike’s Guys, is for exterior door replacement. Often times, exterior doors and trim need replacing due to years of wear and tear from the elements, usually including water damage. It might sound simple to take out an old door and pop in a new one, but it is actually one of the more complex handyman services we offer. There are a lot of variables when it comes to door replacements, such as the width of the jamb, the type of casing, the trim, and bore specifications. There is even more to take into consideration if the existing door is rotten because water is coming in where it shouldn’t – this requires us to determine the cause of the issue and fix it prior to installing the replacement door. Of course, there are companies out there that would install a new door without fixing any underlying issues first, but who wants to put a band-aid on something that will only cause the same problem a year or so down the road?!

Exterior door installation requests are not always in relation to damaged doors, however. We also get requests to install sliding patio doors or traditional French doors where there is not already an existing door. This request may be to install the door in place of a set of windows, or just in a desired location on an exterior wall.

Here is an example of a French door installation we did for a client that wanted to access the backyard from the master bedroom:

If you are interested in having new exterior doors installed, or if you need to replace some damaged ones, our team would be happy to help! The quickest option we offer for quoting this type of project is a virtual estimate: simply snap some photos of your existing problem doors or of the wall you’d like to install a door in and email them to us for a quote. We’ll need the approximate width and height of the doors, along with interior and exterior photos. If you’d like to proceed with the quote we provide, we’re happy to completely manage the project going forward. We’ll send one of our handymen out to take hard measurements, source and order the door, complete installation once it’s delivered, and finish out the door with painting. We’re happy to consider ourselves a ‘one-stop-shop’ for door installations, making it easier on you as the homeowner while allowing us to provide the highest level of quality workmanship!

We can also offer assistance with other types of door installations, such as interior doors, barn doors, and decorative iron doors. Contact us today for more information!

Warm Regards,

Mike’s Guys
