The History of Make-A-Wish:

The Make-A-Wish foundation first began during the summer of 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Earlier that year, a US Customs Agent named Tommy Austin and DPS Officer, Ron Cox, granted a terminal, 7-year-old Leukemia patient his wish of becoming a police officer.

The young boy, Chris Greicius, received his very own uniform, badge and hat, and became Arizona’s first and only honorary DPS officer. Several other officers joined in the effort and brought out a patrol car and motorcycle to escort Chris to his official DPS helicopter ride. Chris passed away shortly after, and for his funeral, was given the official ceremony of a fallen officer.

The story of this heartfelt act spread quickly in Phoenix and greatly influenced DPS officer, Frank Shankwitz. He later held a meeting with other officers, friends and family, and discussed what would be the beginning of the ‘Make-A-Wish’ foundation.

Today, Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories. The foundation really is a great cause, creating miracles for these young children and their loved ones.
